TV contenders at the Golden Globes
'Boss''Homeland''New Girl'Newcomers once again proved irresistibly golden to Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.Seven of this year's 10 nominated TV series -- four in the drama field and three in comedy -- are freshmen, with the field comprising both high-profile entries like Showtime's critically adored conspiracy thriller "Homeland" and relatively under-the-radar ones such as HBO's dark laffer "Enlightened."The development is in keeping with the history of the org, which prides itself on being the first to shine a spotlight on new series, particularly edgier fare that can have a hard time getting noticed by the more traditional Emmys. Past broadcast-net shows like ABC's "My So-Called Life" and current cable entries like HBO's vampy "True Blood" have all felt the awards love first -- and, in some cases, solely -- from the HFPA.Among those making an inaugural appearance on the comedy ballot is Fox's "New Girl," the buzzy breakout hit starring Zooey Deschanel. Rivaling "Enlightened," the field's biggest surprise was Showtime's show-within-a-show laffer "Episodes," which had a brief seven-episode run last winter. While the noms have the potential to give the viewer-challenged Laura Dern and Matt LeBlanc vehicles much-needed profile boosts, that's of little comfort to NBC's "30 Rock," CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" or Showtime's "Nurse Jackie" -- previous nominees that were ignored this time around.Faring better was "Glee," the noteworthy Fox hit that has won this category two years in a row, and "Modern Family," ABC's two-time Emmy champ and the Globe's most-honored comedy this time out.The broadcast nets managed to make a decent showing in comedy but they were shut out entirely in the drama category, which was bad news for CBS' "The Good Wife," a nominee last year."It's harder for network dramas to break through because they can't get away with the things that cable can," says Dalton Ross, assistant managing editor of Entertainment Weekly. "What do all of the (nominated) cable shows have in common? They get pretty damn gritty. There's a lot of cursing, nudity and violence."That's certainly the case with HBO's Prohibition drama "Boardwalk Empire," which exhibited the kind of staying power Nucky Thompson would appreciate, returning to the top-five drama fold for a second time after a win last year."Homeland," another unflinching pay-cable entry, may have been shut out of the SAG nominations but it has the distinction of being the Globes' drama-pack leader with three nods. FX scared up a nod for Ryan Murphy's haunted-house spectacle "American Horror Story," which will compete against another genre show, HBO's George R.R. Martin fantasy "Game of Thrones."Starz, meanwhile, has already scored a victory of sorts by logging its first-ever series nom for "Boss," the Kelsey Grammer-starring tale of political corruption that earned a second-season pick-up even before its premiere. In contrast, AMC, a force in the drama race in recent years, failed to make any sort of showing, thanks to the extended hiatus of previous winner "Mad Men" and the somewhat puzzling omission of "Breaking Bad."" 'Breaking Bad' was acknowledged as having its best season yet," says TV Guide senior critic Matt Roush. "That has to be considered the year's most egregious snub."GOLDEN GLOBES COUNTDOWN Year of couples therapyThe ContendersDrama: Best Picture | Comedy: Best Picture | Best Director | Drama Actor/Actress | Comedy Actor/Actress Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Will voters push honours envelope?
'J. Edgar''Carnage'Congrats for this week's AFI, Broadcast Film Experts, SAG and Globes challengers -- and also to individuals who have been overlooked, don't disheartenment. With approaching noms using their company guilds, BAFTA and AMPAS, keep in mind that individuals voters are quite different from experts and HFPA people.Inside a wide-open race to date, several films have obtained consistently in kudos bulletins, including "The Artist," "Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "The Assistance,Inch "Hugo," "Night time in Paris," "Moneyball" and "War Equine," together with star automobiles like "My Week With Marilyn," "Shame" and "Youthful Adult." Searching good, but no consensus: "The Tree of Existence" and "50/50."Thursday's Globes announcement increased the must-see factor of those films for future kudos voters. But what of game titles that haven't obtained heavily to date? They often fall under two areas: somber photos, or films that might be too innovative. The very first category includes "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy" (with striking performances and design work), "Contagion," "The Lady Using the Dragon Tattoo" and "Very Noisy and extremely Close." Right before the planet experienced an economic depression-caused negative mood, kudos were centered by photos like "No Country for Old Males," "You Will See Bloodstream" and "The Readers." One miracles the way they might have worked out this season.Plus some 2011 films may be hampered because they are so original: Audiences sometimes possess a difficult time wrapping their heads around works that do not feed into expectations."J. Edgar," for instance, gets deserved attention for Leonardo DiCaprio's work, although not much for other groups. The excitement from early tests was that it's a well-crafted, but very traditional bit of storytelling. (Not too there's anything wrong with this.) However, I believed it was probably the most radical films of the season.Spoiler alert: The very first hour develops within an old-fashioned structure. But eventually we discover that in on the action portrayed never happened, which is fairly audacious. Much more amazing is really a breakfast scene, by which Hoover's tenderness for an ailing Clyde Tolson conveys his historical but unexpressed affection. Quite simply, one's heart from the film is really a subtle love scene between two 70-year-old males. And when you do not think that's daring, then you are higher productivity of touch with mainstream moviegoers than you understand. The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. appropriately gave some like to "Carnage." Again, early buzz was wrong, saying it's essentially a captured pics of play. "Carnage" is a lot more than it's a director's and actors' tour p pressure, without having to be flashy. Roman Polanski has drawn off a fragile balanced exercise that couple of other helmers might have done.Similarly, buzz around the under-recognized "A Harmful Method" stated David Cronenberg was going for a detour into conventional filmmaking. In reality, he's again being edgy, coping with mind games, emotional violence and also the war between baser and nobler instincts -- but with no trappings (horror, gore) which make these movies simpler to market.Oddly enough, a number of the 2011 best explorations from the somber-dark world originated from stars. George Clooney's excellent "The Ides of March" disproves the concept entertainers become company directors only for contractual or ego reasons. Clooney reminds that he's a genuine filmmaker. Rob Fiennes (whose "Coriolanus" is wise along with a great showcase for stars, particularly Vanessa Redgrave), Jodie Promote, Julia Roberts, Madonna and Mark Ruffalo might have taken a secure route using their pointing jobs, however they did not.The entire year had lots of popcorn movies, however, many had more about their brains than fluff. "Drive" and "Rise from the Planet from the Apes" were among several 2011 films that deepened their genre trappings with thought and substance. This is also true of "Harry Potter and also the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2." The truth is that, I had been deflated through the first couple of films, which appeared like whimsical kidpics. However the final film is children's fare in title only, because it handles serious findings about existence, dying and human instinct. When WB revealed an honours campaign for "Deathly Hallows," the response started as "You are kidding" then morphed to "That's interesting" and lastly "Great for them."The folks behind that campaign are prefer 2011 filmmakers who're using conventional formulas simply to transcend them. Now you have to ascertain if kudos voters can similarly think outdoors this area.Other films possess a different challenge: getting seen. Will voters -- who've jobs, holidays, families along with a huge stack of screeners -- find time for you to watch "Rampart" (particularly Woodsy Harrelson), "Mess Tailor," "The Very First Grader," "A Much Better Existence," "Albert Nobbs," "We have to Discuss Kevin" yet others? They ought to, to appear past the apparent and appreciate the potential risks being taken. As 2011 involves a detailed, happy holidays and let us hope 2012 is much better for people which everybody is constantly on the break limitations. Michael Fassbender Bares All in Movies That Take a Frank Look at Sex
Michael Fassbender Bares All in Movies That Take a Frank Look at Sex By Jenelle Riley December 8, 2011 Michael Fassbender in "Shame" Michael Fassbender insists on having a sense of humor about sex. The actor is currently delivering acclaimed performances in two films in which coitus is a central topic. In "A Dangerous Method," he plays Carl Jung, whose study of sexuality leads to a torrid affair with a patient played by Keira Knightley. In the NC-17-rated "Shame," which re-teams him with "Hunger" director Steve McQueen, Fassbender delivers a startling naked performance, literally and figuratively, as a sex addict. At a press conference for "Shame," Fassbender and McQueen are like naughty boys misbehaving; Fassbender jokes that he used "fluffers" on set, and McQueen says his main motivation in making the film was "wanting to see Michael naked." When complimented on his lighthearted attitude in the face of such serious subject matter, Fassbender replies, "You have to laugh. In life in general, it's either laugh or cry, and it's always better to laugh." Here are five things to know about Fassbender:1. McQueen and Tarantino changed his career. Fassbender says he was a struggling actor for many years, with "friends who let me sleep on couches," before he landed work in such projects as "Band of Brothers" and "300." "Hunger," in which he lost more than 30 pounds to play real-life IRA prisoner Bobby Sands, changed his life. "Filmmakers saw it, and it got me in the room with them," Fassbender notes. One such filmmaker was Quentin Tarantino, who cast Fassbender as British officer Archie Hicox in "Inglourious Basterds." Fassbender had only one scene, but it was a great one; the way his character holds up three fingers gives away that he isn't German, and a bloody shootout ensues. After the film came out, Fassbender would pass people on the street who were holding up three fingers. "I was confused at first; then I laughed," he recalls. "Quentin puts you in iconic scenes with these little symbols people remember. And that's sort of the dream."2. He's not surprised by all the sex talk around "Shame." Fassbender says he knew going into the movie that much discussion would focus on his full-frontal nudity and the graphic depictions of sexual relations. In fact, he sees it as a positive. "Most audiences are intelligent, and they don't mind exploring these questions," he reasons. "But I also think, when it comes to press, it's just the easiest question. Like with 'Hunger,' the thing people focused in on was 'Wow, he lost all that weighthe must be a good actor!' " He says he wasn't unnerved by the content. "It's like, yeah, you know, I have a penis, and so do half the people out there. And a lot of the other half have seen them. It's not that unusual."3. He considers "Shame" his hardest role to date. Fassbender says his role in "Shame" was difficult, but not for the reasons one might think. "It wasn't about the nakedness; it was the places I was going to," he says. His toughest day involved shooting a tragic scene involving his sister, played by Carey Mulligan. "I remember feeling crazy when that was done, and they were like, 'Okay, change your clothes; we're heading to the gay club!' There was no rest. We shot it in five weeks, and it was an intense energy and focus. It was very draining: This guy is not somebody who likes himself very much, so he's abusing himself quite a bit."4. He treats all his roles with equal respect. It's been a banner year for Fassbender, whose other 2011 films include "Jane Eyre" and "X-Men: First Class." Asked if he takes playing Edward Fairfax Rochester as seriously as he does head mutant Magneto, Fassbender doesn't hesitate. "Absolutely, because my face is up there and I'm attached to it, and I don't want to do bad work," he notes. "I have a responsibility to the story, there's a lot of money and time and energy being put into it, and I have a responsibility to the audience and the fan base. I always try to believe in the characters, even if they're fantastical. I need them to be believable so you can go on the journey with them." He prepares the same for all projects. "I just sit with the script," he says. "I spend an awful lot of time with it, re-reading it like 300 times. Then I live and breathe with the characters; I spend a lot of time with them per day. And I like to have the whole script learned by the first day of shoot." He adds that he spends a lot of time trying out ideas and how a character would behave in different scenarios. "I have a very logical technique in place from the schools I went to; it's all about personality types and movement and space. How someone homophobic works with their hands. How a politician controls the area around them. How a dreamer is more self-indulgent and moves with a dreamlike quality." Asked if this has ever led him to become proprietary about characters and argue that, say, Magneto would never say such a line, Fassbender laughs. "Yeah, probably," he says. "I can see myself having a sort of hissy fit in my helmet. I used to be more like that. Now I'm a lot more open; why not try it out? In 'Shame,' there was a moment where we're sitting on the couch and I don't want to put my arm around my sister when she hugs him. He wants to wriggle free. I remember thinking: Well, just keep it there. Try it this way. Why are you making these rules? It's only closing doors. I can try it and if it doesn't work, scrap it. So I'm not as precious as I was before."5. The first time he saw "Shame" was with his father. "I told my parents while I was making it, 'Look, this isn't one we're going to see together,' " Fassbender recalls. "I warned my father, 'There's some stuff here that's pretty close to the bone.' And he said, 'Look, you're an artist; you've got to do your thing. That's your job.' " When his parents were with him in Italy when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, he reconsidered and invited them. His mother ended up not going, but his father attended. "During the film, I kept thinking, 'Thank God Mom's not here!' " he notes. "And my dad was sitting behind me going, 'Thank God Adele's not here!' But she'll see it, just not in the same room as me." After the film, Fassbender says his father approached McQueen and said, "You did it again." And what did he say to Fassbender? "Just one word. 'Amazing.' 'The Iron Lady' Trailer: Meryl Streep Has the Courage for This Fight
.post-content img {display:none;} While the UK trailer for 'The Iron Lady' relied on some pop-culture staples (Madness's 'Our House' as a music cue, for instance), this brand-new trailer keeps things taut and serious while focusing on the film's star attraction: Meryl Streep. La Streep hasn't won an Academy Award since the 1984 ceremonies (for her role in 'Sophie's Choice'), but based on the early buzz and this new clip, the Best Actress trophy could be hers to lose on Oscar night. Streep stars as Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady,' and not only mimics the former British prime minister with seeming expertise, but also infuses the steely world leader with a bit of wounded humanity. The results speak for themselves -- at least in trailer-form; Viola Davis and Michelle Williams better hope Streep twists an ankle on the way to the Kodak Theater stage on Feb. 26. Why 'Shame' Could 'Legitimize' the NC-17 Rating
Freddie Mercury died 20 years ago today. He was 45.our editor recommendsLady Gaga's Thanksgiving Special Includes Tony Bennett, Turkey Carving (Video)MTV EMAs: Adam Lambert Performs With Queen (Video)Lady Gaga Not Likely to Replace Freddie Mercury on Queen Tour Known for his wide vocal range and unparalleled showmanship, the Zanzibar-born Mercury (nee Farrokh Bulsara) also wrote many of Queen's biggest hits including the six-minute-long rock opus "Bohemian Rhapsody," sports anthems "We Are the Champions" and "We Will Rock You" and throwback "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." STORY:Elizabeth Taylor Joins Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley on Highest-Earning Dead Celebrities List "Somebody to Love" and "Fat Bottom Girls" both got the Glee treatment this year, but in many ways, Mercury remains nearly as relevant today as his was throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Just ask Katy Perry, who dressed up as the Queen frontman for her 24th birthday party in 2008, or Lady Gaga, who named herself after a Queen song. American Idol glam rocker Adam Lambert has also cited the magnetic entertainer as a major influence, and perhaps to prove it, stepped in for the late singer at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, performing a medley of Queen hits along with original members Brian May and Roger Taylor. Soon after midnight on Nov. 24, the phrase RIP Freddie Mercury was already trending in the U.S. and worldwide. Of course, what endures, now two decades after his passing, is the music. Queen sold 32 million albums in the U.S., more than half of which were purchased after Mercury's death, while globally, it's estimated that the band has moved some 300 million units. GALLERY: Top 10 Highest Paid Music Artists Currently celebrating the band's 40th anniversary, surviving member Taylor is leading the charge on the Queen Extravaganza contest, which through audition videos submitted on Youtube, aims to put together a Queen tribute tour and guitarist Maycollaborated with Gaga on the MTV Video Music Awardsin August (he recently told NME he finds Gaga "inspiring"). But Mercury's sprit lives along with iconic imagery forever etched in the minds of the early MTV viewers. Here, seven of those moments: "Bohemian Rhapsody" (1975) The three-act mini-rock opera was No. 1 in the band's native England for nine weeks and also gave Queen its first Top 10 U.S. hit. In later years, it would be sung on Wayne's World and American Idol, but perhaps its most immediate impact came by way of a "promotional film," AKA music video, which accompanied the track and showed the world what a rock star looked like. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (1979) Freddie Mercury was fashion-conscious from the start, regularly wearing bodysuits and sequined accoutrements, sometimes makeup, but for "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," the singer went for a classic leather ensemble that looks like it came straight from Elvis Presley's 1968 special. And no wonder: the song, a No. 1 hit in the U.S., sounded like it was born of that blues-meets-doo wop era. "Flash" (1980) The band made an early foray into film when it was recruited to compose the soundtrack to the movie Flash Gordon. The first and only single, "Flash's Theme," didn't do gangbusters on the charts but it would become a sort of sonic time capsule of an era when multi-layered harmonies and guitar solos ruled. Decades later, Will Ferrell and Jon Heder would skate to the song in Blades of Glory. "Under Pressure" (1981) A jam session the band had with David Bowie at his studio in Montreux, Switzerland turned into the duet "Under Pressure," which featured the now instantly recognizable bass line (sampled by Vanilla Ice in 1990 for his hit "Ice Ice Baby"). It reached the U.S. Top 40 in 1981 and once again topped the charts in the U.K. The music video, however, shows neither artist as both had touring commitments they couldn't shoot around. "I Want to Break Free" (1984) Freddie Mercury and Co. got themselves banned by MTV for the video to "I Want to Break Free," which featured the guys dressed as women in an homage to hit British soap opera Coronation Street. Somehow, the tribute aspect got lost in translation and the network simply saw the clip as a series of scenes featuring Mercury in a leather mini-skirt and fishnet stockings (the moustache, however, remained). The song failed to crack the U.S. Top 40 but its controversial treatment made for an instant talker in the pre-internet age. "Radio Ga Ga" (1984) The inspiration for pop star Lady Gaga's name was one of Queen's later hits, and a modest one at that. Still, it left an impression by using images from Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction movie Metropolis for the video and offering a commentary on the death of radio in its lyrics. And there was a sense of reflection, too, as the band traveled through a post-nuclear world while lamenting the old days. Live Aid (1985) Performing to 72,000 at London's Wembley stadium and another 1.9 billion watching on television, Queen's 25-minute greatest hits set instantly went down as one of the most monumental live performances in the history of rock music and fixed the spotlight directly on Mercury, who led the massive crowd in clap- and sing-alongs. More importantly, he and his bandmates played a key role in raising the more than £150 million that went towards famine relief as a result of the event. Using the deals “we have increased our balance sheet and remain centered on growing our streaming monthly subscriptions and coming back to global profitability after our launch from the U.K. in 2012,” CFO David Wells stated. But several experts state that they’re pessimistic: Caris & Co’s David Burns decreased his cost target to $59 from $77 since Netflix “is delivering the rhetorical signal towards the Street the results of its Q3 pr nightmare haven't turned customer defections, a minimum of not soon.” Lazard Capital Marketplaces’ Barton Crockett states his earnings forecast is under review adding that the organization’s “recent good reputation for quick outlook changes indicates reason to become skeptical.” Janney Capital Marketplaces’ Tony Wible questions Netflix’s decision to boost capital soon after it spent 100s of huge amount of money to repurchase its shares. Everyone's favorite diva has always claimed to be the best at everything, but doing impressions of her fellow Muppets has never been in the cards -- until now. During Moviefone's Muppets Unscripted session, Piggy did an Oscar-worthy impersonation of two of the most popular Muppets around: Fozzie Bear and Animal. Det. Rudeski - Joe ChrestNearly couple of years after cameras folded in New Orleans on "The Hungry Rabbit Jumps," the Nicolas Cage-starring vigilante thriller, now retitled "Justice," has started striking theaters in Europe and Hong Kong. It's not worth the wait: This unconvincing, workmanlike genre piece reps a considerable dip in quality for director Roger Donaldson after his 2008 heist pic "The Lending Company Job." With no release date yet for your U.S., where its title is "Seeking Justice," ancillary reps the pic's best chance for modest recoupment. Located in Blighty as counterprogramming to "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning -- Part 1," the pic acquired just 183,000 ($293,000) from 244 cinemas within the initial few days, showing a fast exit from theaters. Inside the recent "The Next 72 Hrs,Inch audiences rooted for Russell Crowe's British teacher to obtain an unlikely expertise and bust his wife from prison. "Justice" attempts the same trick, casting Cage as nice-guy British teacher Will Gerard, easily dressed in corduroy pants and spectacles. When his music artist wife, Laura (The month of the month of january Manley), is very raped, Will feels their very own powerlessness. Enter shaven-headed, sharp-suited Simon (Guy Pearce), who offers street justice for your crime in exchange for the following favor of vaguely modest proportions. The rapist is going to be summarily carried out. Simon is like his word when he later asks Will to complete some routine surveillance around the guy he claims can be a child molester. Nevertheless the stakes rise when he demands that will murder the suspect in mind. In the contrived passage, Will finds themselves recommended like a factor inside the dying from the local newspaper reporter, held for police interrogation after which it freed having a rogue cop when he unveils his understanding in the vigilante network's code phrase, "The hungry rabbit jumps." Clearly, it calculates he was very best in custody of the children from the children. Despite a couple-part climax, beginning getting a monster truck rally within the New Orleans Superdome, then moving for the abandoned New Orleans Center retail complex, "Justice" lacks the consistent thrills that could allow the audience to indulge its numerous implausibilities. In another questionable choice of roles, Cage is unpersuasive becoming an inner-city schoolteacher, an element that delivers him little leeway to research the loopier shades that have been displayed so entertainingly in "Bad Lieutenant: The avenue for call New Orleans" and "Kick-Ass." As Will's friend and friend, gifted thesp Harold Perrineau isn't given much to make use of, and Pearce (drafted near the shoot start date) doesn't appear sensible in the shadowy Simon character, whose motivation remains obscure, partly because the p.o.v. remains almost exclusively while using protag. One particularly troubling area of the film is its ambivalent perspective on vigilante action, disapproving really its corrupt execution than its essence. Lenser David Tattersall uses compact camera models to capture an authentic flavor of publish-Katrina New Orleans, but such verisimilitude seems wasted round the script credited to Robert Tannen and Yuri Zeltser (working in the story by Tannen and cinematographer Todd Hickey), though due to the extended amount of publish-production, what resemblance the finished film bears for his or her original conception is anyone's guess. Inclusion of moments within the city's newspaper, police department plus an urban secondary school signifies an ambition to supply texture and flavor like "The Wire," clearly an positive goal.Camera (color, wide-screen, HD), David Tattersall editor, Jay Cassidy music, J. 9 Milestones in the Evolution of Robin Williams
In this weekend’s Happy Feet Two, Robin Williams voices Ramn, a South American penguin lothario, and Lovelace, a deep-voiced love guru. So how did a self-described quiet child from Chicago transform himself into one of Hollywood’s most energetic Academy Award winners and skilled impressionists, who pulls double duty in Warner Bros.’s latest animated feature? You can always trace a direct line through a few important roles to illustrate what led to an actor’s current success. As such, let’s look at nine pivotal performances that track the evolution of Robin Williams. Mork & Mindy (1978) After graduating from Juilliard, Williams moved to Los Angeles where he honed his stand-up routine on the west coast comedy circuit and auditioned for television roles. One such guest part on Happy Days — as Mork, an alien from the planet Ork who helps abduct the Fonz — was such a hit with the show’s creator Gary Marshall that Marshall created a sci-fi sitcom for Williams’s character. Mork & Mindy proved to be the breakthrough project that made Robins a recognizable name and earned him a Golden Globe in 1979. Popeye (1980) Halfway through the four-season run of Mork & Mindy, Williams made his big screen debut as the titular character in Robert Altman’s adaptation of Popeye. (Yes, a live-action musical adaptation of Popeye in which Robin Williams squints and sings “I am what I am” with inflated forearms exists.) Williams reportedly won the role after Dustin Hoffman dropped out. In spite of a respectable effort to bring life to a two-dimensional comic character with a lopsided smile and an obsession with spinach, Popeye earned mixed reviews. Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) Following one small success (The World According to Garp) and a trio of forgettable titles (The Best of Times, Club Paradise and Seize the Day), Williams established himself as a legitimate dramatic actor and a box office draw with Barry Levinson’s Vietnam war comedy-drama. As Armed Forces Radio Service DJ Adrian Cronauer, Williams was able to use his trademark rapid-fire monologue style and improvise extensively. Thanks in part to Levinson’s direction (which carefully pulled Williams out of his stand-up shell) and the well-formed script, Williams was able to shed his fast-talking persona for a fully-fleshed character by the end of the film. Good Morning, Vietnam earned Williams his first Academy Award nomination. Aladdin (1992) After solidifying himself as one of Hollywood’s most underestimated dramatic actors in Dead Poets Society and The Fisher King, Williams established his talent as a voice actor in Aladdin. Animator Eric Goldberg was reportedly so determined to get the actor on board as the Genie that he animated the Genie doing some of Williams’s stand-up routines. The actor was so impressed that he signed onto the project, even agreeing to participate for scale pay as long as his voice was not used for merchandising and his character took up less than 25% of the film’s promotional materials. When the studio reneged on some contractual stipulations that Williams had tried to enforce, the actor stopped supporting the project and refused to work with Disney again — until years later, after chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg had been fired. In addition to being a milestone for the actor, Aladdin proved to be a landmark for animated films in general as it was the first title to be advertised on the strength of its voice actors.

Right after his questionable second turn as host in the Golden Globes last The month of the month of january, Ough Gervais introduced he shouldn’t and wouldn’t check it out again. Now he's carrying it out, mainly to “shut up all people fucking idiots who mentioned that we’d 't be requested back,” he written on his blog. And also the third stint will “definitely” be his last. Roughly according to him. Here's Gervais’ publish: So that it seems like I’m hosting The Golden Globes for just about any third and definitely final time. It absolutely was a hard decision in truth. There has been benefits and disadvantages. I loved carrying it out, however was worried that we couldn’t enhance a year ago. I’m in LA anyway after i’m beginning Existence’s Short on Cinemax. However didn’t want the Globes to overshadow the series. I understood lots of people might be uncomfortable with me at night being host. (It had been an expert incidentally.) What really expected the quantity making me say yes, was the fact it could shut up all people fucking idiots who mentioned that we’d 't be requested back. Is the wrong reason to behave? ' '. In my opinion it's. Now here’s the main one factor. The outrage I triggered was clearly, of course, totally from proportion for the a couple of a few things i mentioned. I don’t think anybody had any to become upset nonetheless they were. This year I’m can make sure their offence is completely justified. The most effective factor relating to this is writing the gags. I like writing one card inserts. Specifically once they can’t be applied inside a other context. It offers them a distinctive weight towards the evening if you know what happens I'm speaking about.

REVIEW: Clint Eastwood Tries to Humanize an Ambitious, Dangerous Pipsqueak in J. Edgar
As Lily Tomlin’s Ernestine once said, “There’s nothing like a Hoover when you’re dealing with dirt.” Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar could use more dirt: This is a sensitive, sympathetic portrait of a scummy little man, an earnest attempt to map the contours and contradictions of a complicated son-of-a-bitch. But it’s all too earnest, to the point of serving, unwittingly or otherwise, as an apologia. Even Eastwood’s attempt at a poignant Hoover death scene fails to hit the mark: I for one would want to stick the guy with a pin to make sure he was really dead. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. J. Edgar, which flips between two roughly defined eras, the 1930s and the 1960s through the mid-1970s, shows us how the ambitious and wily, if initially rather shy and awkward, John Edgar Hoover became one of the most feared men in America. Leonardo DiCaprio wears his usual old-man baby face for one half of the picture and a mask of moderately effective age makeup for the other. His performance is dutiful and respectful and meticulously managed, which is exactly what’s wrong with it. Even though DiCaprio was a child actor — a wonderful one — he never really had a youth on-screen. Directors like Martin Scorsese saw what was astonishing about him and immediately began grooming him for greatness in pictures like Gangs of NY and The Aviator. Now, he can never be casual — it’s a luxury he was never able to afford — and Eastwood has done him no favors by locking him into yet another hall-of-fame role. It’s a testament to DiCaprio’s precision and sensitivity that we feel as much for his J. Edgar as we do. But seeing DiCaprio encased in a mask of soft, saggy jowls — in these scenes, he uses his buttery-sonorous vocal tone and piercing blue-green eyes, effectively if a bit desperately, to do much of the work — is still dispiriting. If this is what “greatness,” in a movie or in a performance, has to mean, I’d prefer a more intimate puniness, particularly when it comes to portraying a character like J. Edgar Hoover. J. Edgar was written by Dustin Lance Black, who also wrote the 2008 Milk, and it represents a noble attempt to dovetail Hoover’s professional “accomplishments” with his personal life. The picture hits all the significant markers: Hoover’s intense relationship with his domineering mother (played by an imperious Judi Dench), his early, pipsqueaky ambitions and his eventual rise to become the head of the F.B.I., his roles (both the imagined and the real ones) in bringing down Depression-era criminals like John Dillinger and Machine Gun Kelly, and his frustrating, and frustrated, search for the kidnapper and killer of the Lindbergh baby, Bruno Hauptmann. Later, after more or less crowning himself King of United States Intel, he bullies the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt (crowing hypocritically over his discovery that she was having an affair with a woman), Martin Luther King (whom he viewed as an enemy of democracy, or the American Way, or something) and Robert F. Kennedy (played by Jeffrey Donovan of Burn Notice, a Boston-area native who finally gets to use the local accent that Massachusetts actors work so hard to shed). But in between all that, Hoover had a tortured, complicated personal life, which J. Edgar takes great pains to show. Early on, in the 1930s, Hoover shows an interest in a typing-pool cutie, Helen Gandy (Naomi Watts), who, being a strong, independent woman — and perhaps sensing a bad risk in the personal-relationship department — refuses his initial marriage proposal and instead becomes his secretary, sticking with him until and beyond the end of his life. (Watts has a great, ’30s-style face, as already evidenced by King Kong; in her age makeup, she’s a dead ringer for the present-day Hanna Schygulla, which is maybe not such a bad thing.) Even more significant is Hoover’s relationship, both professional and personal, with his longtime colleague Clyde Tolson. The movie outlines, quite believably, how Hoover’s attraction to Tolson first manifested itself as intense nervousness and a desire to dominate. Tolson is unfazed. One of the first things he does is take Hoover to be fitted for some custom-made suits — sort of like a Depression-era Rachel Zoe — and before long, the two are confidants, though they of course have to hide the personal nature of their relationship behind closed doors. Hammer does make a coolly winsome Tolson. (Note to Hammer: Bambi called — he wants his eyelashes back.) And in the movie’s most effective and most piercing scene, Hoover and Tolson beat the crap out of each other in a hotel room, tussling out of frustration and, it seems, the rawest and most visceral kind of love. (Hoover and Tolson also sport some pretty smashing bathrobes in this sequence, courtesy of Eastwood’s frequent costume designer Deborah Hopper.) In general, it’s hard not to feel sympathy for a closeted gay man in the days before Stonewall — unless he’s J. Edgar Hoover. Eastwood, Black and DiCaprio are all dancing as fast as they can in their efforts to humanize Hoover. But all you see is the dancing, and while it’s nice that the picture is honest enough to show how creepy, duplicitous, manipulative and power-mad Hoover was, there are too many places where the only suitable soundtrack would be the tiniest violins in the world. We’re supposed to feel something as we watch the still-youthful J. Edgar mourning the death of his mother. (Grief-stricken, he dons one of her old dresses as a piano tinkles poignantly in the background, a moment of psychoanalysis that’s about as insightful as the forensic psychiatrist’s diagnosis in Psycho.) But the terrible thing about life is that mothers die: Good people and scoundrels alike have to deal with that reality. Grieving over our dead parents, as well as being gay or straight or bi, are the things that make us definably human. So why does J. Edgar Hoover — a man who retooled basic civil liberties to his own liking, setting precedents that will never be undone — deserve any special pleading? In the past few years, Eastwood has given us a terrific, brazenly liberal-minded movie about what it means to be an American today (Gran Torino) and a rousing, if somewhat oversimplified, picture about how Nelson Mandela helped heal a nation with football (Invictus). He also gave us a plodding, overserious period picture in Changeling. J. Edgar is more of the same, but because it attempts to shoulder such a large historical burden, it’s an even bigger failure. J. Edgar is a handsome-looking film in a Smithsonian Institution kind of way, featuring all the right desk lamps, the proper period-specific typewriters, the silk pocket squares folded just so. And cinematographer (and frequent Eastwood collaborator) Tom Stern gives the whole thing a satiny, pewter-toned glow. But for all its exterior grandness, J. Edgar is still just tinny and overreaching. This is an overgrown movie about a dwarf among men. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy: Our Prime School Years
Creating a stoner movie -- it may sound easy, right? Well, it is not! First, you'll need a wise decision, and you require a, uh... hey, maybe you have, like, checked out your hands? I am talking about, really checked out it. You think there might be a whole world living beneath your finger nail. Oh, sorry: I acquired distracted. Creating a stoner movie! Right! Well, every stoner flick includes a totally unscientific formula that should be adopted so as for this to become effective. So, in recognition of 'A Very Harold and Kumar three dimensional Christmas,' which opens today, Moviefone provides you with a short user guide regarding how to Create a Stoner Movie. You'll need... A pothead that's a lot more stoned and stupid compared to relaxation of his buddies: There's Jim Breuer from 'Half-Baked,' ordering pizza, Funyuns, water, celery and grape jelly Rory Cochran of 'Dazed and Confused,' speaking about how exactly George Washington accustomed to grow their own secret stash within the fields of Mount Vernon. You usually need one stoner who's too stupid for their own good to create the relaxation from the cast seem like Einstein. One psychedelic scene that's totally, 100 % crazy and makes simply no sense whatsoever: There is a scene in each and every drug-related film in which the protagonists finish up stumbling on some totally absurd substance. Then, the strange stuff begins to occur -- rainbows come out of trees, buddies start to look like animated figures, hands become some living, breathing creature that may choke them out at any second. Good quality good examples of the would be the bowling dream sequence in 'The Large Lebowski,' where Shaun Bridges's The Dude pretends he's a bowling ball, and also the bar scene in 'Fear and Loathing in Vegas,' where Johnny Depp's Hunter S. Thompson Raoul Duke imagines he's encircled with a crowd filled with gigantic lizards. The stoner hero who eventually ends up saving your day even though he's, well, stoned: Seth Rogen saving James Franco from the burning barn in 'Pineapple Express' and Ice Cube beating in the neighborhood bully in 'Friday' are two perfect good examples of stoner heroics. It's difficult to feel motivated by anybody who sits around and smokes pot the whole film, but -- ultimately -- they manage can provide relief. A scene such as this: Quotables: Lines that fellow pot people who smoke can quote to one another is mandatory. For instance, 'Up in Smoke' has "Hey guy, am I driving OK?" After which obviously there's Matthew McConaughey in 'Dazed in Wrongly identified as "You have some pot? ... Well, it would be a great deal cooler should you did." These movies might not have resided on whether it were not for that memorable quotes -- it isn't such as the audiences are likely to have the ability to remember anything as complicated being an actual story. An incredible soundtrack: No stoner movie will get by with no awesome soundtrack. An ideal illustration of this really is 'Easy Driver,' with a murderer's row of awesome tunes (Steppenwolf's 'Born to become Wild,' The Band's 'The Weight,' Jimi Hendrix's 'If 6 Was 9,' etc.). A great soundtrack can overcome any plot inadequacies. An existential question: That scene in which a character asks an issue that actually enables you to think. These existential moments is often as jokey because the reason for 'Knocked Up,' when Katherine Heigl first meets Seth Rogen's buddies after discovering she's pregnant. This is when she eventually ends up getting asked about her developing fetus "stealing" her food. References to marijuana: Finally, probably the most apparent factor about this list. 'Up in Smoke,' includes a vehicle scene where Cheech and Chong smoke some pot how big their arm. For some thing recent, let us opt for the primary character in 'Grandma's Boy,' that has a huge bong he attempts to play off like a flower vase. ### So, that's it: the key stoner movie formula. Now, all that you should do is log off the couch, write a script, gather financing, hire some famous stars along with a director. Hm, really, on second thought, that seems like it may be demanding. Before you begin, you might like to take something which will awesome your anxiety... [Photo: Everett Collection] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED
Here's Why Neil Patrick Harris isn't Gay in 'Harold & Kumar Christmas'
Should you be taken aback if this was introduced that acclaimed director Werner Herzog would take part in the villain within the next Tom Cruise movie, 'One Shot,' you are only some of the one. Obviously, that possible trepidation does not extend the director themself. Stated Herzog to Movieline, the main reason he was hired to begin with was because he's "good." "I am fairly good being an actor if this involves roles of hostile or harmful men, or violent and debased and dysfunctional figures," Herzog told S.T. VanAirsdale. "Not to mention, as this is a large Hollywood film, they've analyzed my performance in other films. So I wasn't involved with any casting I had been just asked." Tight on why he was "asked," Herzog did not make use of any modesty: "Because I am good! The thing is, if this involves an costly film, you cannot fuss making a selection of someone who is actually a filmmaker. If you're bad being an actor, it might really damage the film. So that they apparently required a really critical look -- I am talking about, the director, producer, Tom Cruise -- they required a great take a look at things i am onscreen being an actor." Starring Cruise and Herzog, 'One Shot' -- in the ninth novel in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series -- is within production now. [via Movieline] [Photo: WireImage]

Goran Visnjic Feels 'Privileged' to remain in 'The Girl While using Dragon Tattoo'
'The Girl While using Dragon Tattoo' won't maintain theaters for the next two several days, but fans of Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millennium Trilogy are finally acquiring an idea from the products the big-budget studio adaptation in the books will probably be like. From that incredibly sexy poster as well as the mysterious viral marketing campaigns, to star Difficulties losing f-tanks about producing the adult $100 million R-rated movie, and Rooney Mara rehashing her vomit-inducing audition for your female leading role, director David Fincher's 'Dragon Tattoo' appears like it's living around the power of the beloved books. Something co-star Goran Visnjic is simply very happy to confirm. The 'ER' alum co-stars as Lisbeth Salandar's boss, Dragan Armansky, despite the fact that it is not a massive part (no less than not inside the first film), he's doing still share some pivotal moments with Mara, Craig and Steven Berkoff to obtain the action of 'Dragon Tattoo' started. America online TV spoken with Visnjic about his approaching arc on 'Pan Am,' but he was most animated speaking in regards to the "amazing" 'Dragon Tattoo' set, coping with Fincher and also the hopes to return for an additional two films. The thrill around 'Dragon Tattoo' is really huge. The thing that was it like sitting on this kind of secretive, high-profile set? I used to be there for such some time -- I desired to request David, 'You know, is one able to be around round the set, just a few days, just to look at everybody work?' [Laughs] It absolutely was so awesome. Fortunately my character will most likely be through ... it's represented in many three books, therefore i desire to see myself over the following film. God knows just what the next script is gonna bring us ... can one keeping it or no? However desire to do more. People day or two were really amazing. And coping with David Fincher? Fincher actually was awesome. He's among people males that whenever he sees an actress kind of in the dead place, he's like, 'You're doing everything right, however, you kind of missed just something.' You don't know, you can't even pinpoint how it is, but he's ready to can be found in and basically open a choice with something and you're simply like, 'Jesus! Why I didn't realize that before? Clearly, yeah!' It's a really exciting set. Everybody seems being really involved one hundred percent. Clearly Armansky has many moments with Lisbeth -- cure did at your job for your first film? I labored a little with Steven Berkoff, Rooney Mara and Difficulties, plus it only decided to be amazing ... he's a specialist within the casting. I really felt fortunate being on that set. Armansky must return -- he's Lisbeth's boss! They can't perform another two movies without him ... I am hoping you're right! I merely have no idea certainly -- the script is certainly unique of it -- however i've got a similar hopes when you. Beginners make an effort to get 'Real' at B.O.
'Footloose''The Thing''The Large Year'Paramount's "Footloose" remake may not be capable of dance away while using weekend's domestic B.O. crown despite positive individual to individual from advanced tests. Holdover "Real Steel" and sci-fi horror prequel "The Main One Factor" may even vie for your top place. "Footloose," which launches today at 3,549 Stateside locations, will most likely bow around $15 million, according to pre-weekend monitoring services. That doesn't leave much wiggle room for your dance pic, since DreamWorks' "Real Steel" will most likely drop some 45%-50% within the second outing, which might put it with- in hailing distance of "Footloose.""Footloose." Universal's "The Main One Factor" prequel influences mix too, even though studio has a bit more modest anticipation with an opening inside the low double-amounts. 20th Century Fox's adult-skewed bird-watching comedy "The Big Year" will find it hard to fly, B.O. experts say, with dismal prospects inside the $3 million-$5 million range. Overseas, "Real Steel" should keep its No. 1 position, growing to areas like Columbia as well as the U.K. Last weekend, the film bowed with $22.6 000 0000, ample to knock "The Smurfs" in the eight-week roost atop the world box office. In your area, the weekend will need a considerable hit versus. a year ago, when "Jackass 3dInch acquired the finest opening ever in October with $50 million. That's considered a b - -.To. anomaly, so most bizzers are focusing on last weekend just like a better comparison. To be able to build individual to individual (and elevated by passionate test tests), Componen situated free country wide sneaks of "Footloose" on Sept. 30, additionally to tests for cheerleading camps and youth groups. Componen mentioned the advanced tests were proficient at reinforcing interest among the pic's core demos, mainly teenage ladies and ladies between 30 and 40. But there is not much movement among male auds, meaning "Footloose" continues to be mainly a dual-quadrant pic. The first "Footloose" increased to become b -.To. sensation in 1984, cuming almost $80 million -- nearly 10 occasions its opening-weekend gross. Par's remake set you back a modest $24 million, with OK overseas prospects to keep the climate light. The film bowed day-and-date with $1.2 million from Nz and australia. Pic develops a couple of days ago for the next five areas, like the U.K., with major areas for instance France, South usa and Russia set to follow along with together with over the following handful of several days. Universal is distribbing "The Main One Factor" overseas for Morgan Creek, that have worldwide rights for the film. "The Main One Factor" -- a prequel to John Carpenter's original 1982 film -- launches a couple of days ago in Oz, France and Taiwan. In your area, there's lots riding round the film's opening perf, especially since Componen launches "Paranormal Activity 3" next weekend. It is not certain whether auds will embrace both photos inside the days just before Halloween. The holiday itself typically isn't a large moviegoing weekend, though Halloween this year falls around the Monday. To check reasons, Universal indicates Screen Gems' "The Stepfather," which bowed this same weekend this past year with $11.6 000 0000 and cumed only $29.millions of in your area. Fox's "The Big Year," allotted inside a reported $28 million, may well be a tough cost the studio: The film follows three passionate bird-audiences who compete to put rare wild wild birds within the U . s . States. Stars Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin will attract some filmgoers, even though mainly adult aud may be frustrated by tepid reviews. In limited release, The brand new the new sony Pictures Classics bows Pedro Almodovar's "The Skin Home IsInch at six locations in NY and L.A. Additionally a couple of days ago, Millennium Films' Nicole Kidman-Nicolas Cage thriller "Trespass" launches at 10 Stateside engagements, while Anchor Bay's "Texas Killing Fields," starring Mike Worthington and Jessica Chastain, opens at three. 5 top George Clooney Performances
5 top George Clooney Performances By Christy Lemire October 7, 2011 Photo by Vital Pictures/Dale Robinette George Clooney in "Up in mid-airInch La (AP) A few days ago, we looked back around the eclectic career of Kaira Pitt, and marveled in the intelligence of his options in addition to his instinct to shun his movie-star persona while still giving the folks what they need.Pitt's friend and co-star within the "Ocean's" movies, George Clooney, has proven similar tastes and daring both before and behind the camera. And along the way of remaining in keeping with his values, he's created out probably the most respected careers around. Now, he directs the political drama "The Ides of March" and plays a supporting role like a governor choosing the Democratic presidential nomination. So here's a glance at his five best performances. While you can most likely guess, I'd election for him for anything: "Michael Clayton" (2007): Clooney provides a wise, subtly effective performance within the title role like a "fixer" in a exclusive New You are able to lawyer. He's a guy who's existed a very long time and seen it all. He carries the cumulative weight a person can have of disappointments in the eyes, his voice, the way in which his shoulders hunch. But, Michael still responds skillfully and appropriately to whatever challenge is thrust upon him. All of the better of what Clooney can perform is displayed here: the dazzling charisma along with the vulnerability. Author-director Tony Gilroy gives Clooney an chance to complete the best work of his career inside a part that's meaty but rarely fancy. "Syriana" (2005): Clooney notoriously put aside his dashing good looks, attaining 30 pounds in thirty days, growing a beard and shaving his hairline to experience Bob Barnes, a fictionalized version of former CIA officer Robert Baer. He was unrecognizable, an important piece in author-director Stephen Gaghan's dense and complex film about the worldwide oil industry, and also the performance gained him the Academy Award for the best supporting actor. Clooney am devoted, he seriously hurt his back shooting a torture scene, and was still being hurt while pointing and co-starring in "Night, and Good Luck." This can be a prime illustration of his readiness to reject the glamour to be a superstar in support of doing wise, challenging work. "From Sight" (1998): Buying and selling snappy banter having a tough-but-feminine Jennifer Lopez, Clooney was sexy as hell like a career bank thief in Steven Soderbergh's funny and surprising film. The scene where the two flirt in a hotel bar, using its warm lighting and flattering close-ups, is most likely the movie's best-known also it crackles with romantic tension. But Clooney is known as upon to complete a lot more than smolder. "From Sight" ranges from buddy comedy to gripping suspense to sultry noir, and Clooney has got the flexibility to maintain all individuals different genres. He's most likely a theif and he's most definitely hard to rely on, but he's also irresistible. Clooney makes that contrast work. "Up in mid-airInch (2009): Clooney reaches the peak of his dynamism because a guy who constitutes a living by firing others. This could appear as an impossible contradiction, but Jason Reitman's film fleshes the character, Ryan Bingham, with shadings and subtlety, and Clooney will get excellent support from co-stars Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. (The 3 received Academy Award nominations.) Ryan jets across the nation, providing pink slips without batting a watch and worrying no more than growing his frequent-flier miles. He breezes through existence effectively, and Clooney's naturally masculine energy provides the character real zing, but younger crowd finds the soulfulness that's eventually needed from the role, too. "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009): Clooney's work here also made an appearance on my listing of 5 best animated performances. "Up in mid-airInch gained him an Oscar nomination for the best actor that year, but he's just like memorable behind the microphone lending his smooth voice to the starring role from the crafty Mr. Fox. He brings everything charm within the richness of his delivery, all his signature inteligence and presence to director Wes Anderson's superbly detailed stop-motion animation. And along the way of remaining in keeping with his values, he's created out probably the most respected careers around. Now, he directs the political drama "The Ides of March" and plays a supporting role like a governor choosing the Democratic presidential nomination. So here's a glance at his five best performances. As possible most likely guess, I'd election for him for anything: "Michael Clayton" (2007): Clooney provides a wise, subtly effective performance within the title role like a "fixer" in a exclusive NY lawyer. He's a guy who's existed a very long time and seen everything. He carries the cumulative weight a person can have of disappointments in the eyes, his voice, the way in which his shoulders hunch. But, Michael still responds skillfully and appropriately to whatever challenge is thrust upon him. Best wishes of the items Clooney can perform is displayed here: the dazzling charisma along with the vulnerability. Author-director Tony Gilroy gives Clooney an chance to complete the best work of his career inside a part that's meaty but rarely fancy. "Syriana" (2005): Clooney notoriously put aside his dashing visual appearance, attaining 30 pounds in thirty days, growing a beard and shaving his hairline to experience Bob Barnes, a fictionalized version of former CIA officer Robert Baer. He was unrecognizable, an important piece in author-director Stephen Gaghan's dense and complex film concerning the global oil industry, and also the performance gained him the Academy Award for the best supporting actor. Clooney am devoted, he seriously hurt his back shooting a torture scene, and was still being hurt while pointing and co-starring in "Night, and Best Of Luck.Inch This can be a prime illustration of his readiness to reject the glamour to be a superstar in support of doing wise, challenging work. Fox" (2009): Clooney's work here also made an appearance on my small listing of 5 best animated performances. "Up in mid-airInch gained him an Oscar nomination for the best actor that year, but he's just like memorable behind the microphone lending his smooth voice towards the starring role from the crafty Mr. Fox. He brings everything charm within the richness of his delivery, all his signature inteligence and presence to director Wes Anderson's superbly detailed stop-motion animation. And basically the thought of this handsome guy playing a furry, little woodland creature although an imaginative one having a sly spontaneity is sufficient to bring an enormous smile for your face.Copyright 2011 Connected Press.
