TV contenders at the Golden Globes

'Boss''Homeland''New Girl'Newcomers once again proved irresistibly golden to Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.Seven of this year's 10 nominated TV series -- four in the drama field and three in comedy -- are freshmen, with the field comprising both high-profile entries like Showtime's critically adored conspiracy thriller "Homeland" and relatively under-the-radar ones such as HBO's dark laffer "Enlightened."The development is in keeping with the history of the org, which prides itself on being the first to shine a spotlight on new series, particularly edgier fare that can have a hard time getting noticed by the more traditional Emmys. Past broadcast-net shows like ABC's "My So-Called Life" and current cable entries like HBO's vampy "True Blood" have all felt the awards love first -- and, in some cases, solely -- from the HFPA.Among those making an inaugural appearance on the comedy ballot is Fox's "New Girl," the buzzy breakout hit starring Zooey Deschanel. Rivaling "Enlightened," the field's biggest surprise was Showtime's show-within-a-show laffer "Episodes," which had a brief seven-episode run last winter. While the noms have the potential to give the viewer-challenged Laura Dern and Matt LeBlanc vehicles much-needed profile boosts, that's of little comfort to NBC's "30 Rock," CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" or Showtime's "Nurse Jackie" -- previous nominees that were ignored this time around.Faring better was "Glee," the noteworthy Fox hit that has won this category two years in a row, and "Modern Family," ABC's two-time Emmy champ and the Globe's most-honored comedy this time out.The broadcast nets managed to make a decent showing in comedy but they were shut out entirely in the drama category, which was bad news for CBS' "The Good Wife," a nominee last year."It's harder for network dramas to break through because they can't get away with the things that cable can," says Dalton Ross, assistant managing editor of Entertainment Weekly. "What do all of the (nominated) cable shows have in common? They get pretty damn gritty. There's a lot of cursing, nudity and violence."That's certainly the case with HBO's Prohibition drama "Boardwalk Empire," which exhibited the kind of staying power Nucky Thompson would appreciate, returning to the top-five drama fold for a second time after a win last year."Homeland," another unflinching pay-cable entry, may have been shut out of the SAG nominations but it has the distinction of being the Globes' drama-pack leader with three nods. FX scared up a nod for Ryan Murphy's haunted-house spectacle "American Horror Story," which will compete against another genre show, HBO's George R.R. Martin fantasy "Game of Thrones."Starz, meanwhile, has already scored a victory of sorts by logging its first-ever series nom for "Boss," the Kelsey Grammer-starring tale of political corruption that earned a second-season pick-up even before its premiere. In contrast, AMC, a force in the drama race in recent years, failed to make any sort of showing, thanks to the extended hiatus of previous winner "Mad Men" and the somewhat puzzling omission of "Breaking Bad."" 'Breaking Bad' was acknowledged as having its best season yet," says TV Guide senior critic Matt Roush. "That has to be considered the year's most egregious snub."GOLDEN GLOBES COUNTDOWN Year of couples therapyThe ContendersDrama: Best Picture | Comedy: Best Picture | Best Director | Drama Actor/Actress | Comedy Actor/Actress Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Will voters push honours envelope?

'J. Edgar''Carnage'Congrats for this week's AFI, Broadcast Film Experts, SAG and Globes challengers -- and also to individuals who have been overlooked, don't disheartenment. With approaching noms using their company guilds, BAFTA and AMPAS, keep in mind that individuals voters are quite different from experts and HFPA people.Inside a wide-open race to date, several films have obtained consistently in kudos bulletins, including "The Artist," "Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "The Assistance,Inch "Hugo," "Night time in Paris," "Moneyball" and "War Equine," together with star automobiles like "My Week With Marilyn," "Shame" and "Youthful Adult." Searching good, but no consensus: "The Tree of Existence" and "50/50."Thursday's Globes announcement increased the must-see factor of those films for future kudos voters. But what of game titles that haven't obtained heavily to date? They often fall under two areas: somber photos, or films that might be too innovative. The very first category includes "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy" (with striking performances and design work), "Contagion," "The Lady Using the Dragon Tattoo" and "Very Noisy and extremely Close." Right before the planet experienced an economic depression-caused negative mood, kudos were centered by photos like "No Country for Old Males," "You Will See Bloodstream" and "The Readers." One miracles the way they might have worked out this season.Plus some 2011 films may be hampered because they are so original: Audiences sometimes possess a difficult time wrapping their heads around works that do not feed into expectations."J. Edgar," for instance, gets deserved attention for Leonardo DiCaprio's work, although not much for other groups. The excitement from early tests was that it's a well-crafted, but very traditional bit of storytelling. (Not too there's anything wrong with this.) However, I believed it was probably the most radical films of the season.Spoiler alert: The very first hour develops within an old-fashioned structure. But eventually we discover that in on the action portrayed never happened, which is fairly audacious. Much more amazing is really a breakfast scene, by which Hoover's tenderness for an ailing Clyde Tolson conveys his historical but unexpressed affection. Quite simply, one's heart from the film is really a subtle love scene between two 70-year-old males. And when you do not think that's daring, then you are higher productivity of touch with mainstream moviegoers than you understand. The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. appropriately gave some like to "Carnage." Again, early buzz was wrong, saying it's essentially a captured pics of play. "Carnage" is a lot more than it's a director's and actors' tour p pressure, without having to be flashy. Roman Polanski has drawn off a fragile balanced exercise that couple of other helmers might have done.Similarly, buzz around the under-recognized "A Harmful Method" stated David Cronenberg was going for a detour into conventional filmmaking. In reality, he's again being edgy, coping with mind games, emotional violence and also the war between baser and nobler instincts -- but with no trappings (horror, gore) which make these movies simpler to market.Oddly enough, a number of the 2011 best explorations from the somber-dark world originated from stars. George Clooney's excellent "The Ides of March" disproves the concept entertainers become company directors only for contractual or ego reasons. Clooney reminds that he's a genuine filmmaker. Rob Fiennes (whose "Coriolanus" is wise along with a great showcase for stars, particularly Vanessa Redgrave), Jodie Promote, Julia Roberts, Madonna and Mark Ruffalo might have taken a secure route using their pointing jobs, however they did not.The entire year had lots of popcorn movies, however, many had more about their brains than fluff. "Drive" and "Rise from the Planet from the Apes" were among several 2011 films that deepened their genre trappings with thought and substance. This is also true of "Harry Potter and also the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2." The truth is that, I had been deflated through the first couple of films, which appeared like whimsical kidpics. However the final film is children's fare in title only, because it handles serious findings about existence, dying and human instinct. When WB revealed an honours campaign for "Deathly Hallows," the response started as "You are kidding" then morphed to "That's interesting" and lastly "Great for them."The folks behind that campaign are prefer 2011 filmmakers who're using conventional formulas simply to transcend them. Now you have to ascertain if kudos voters can similarly think outdoors this area.Other films possess a different challenge: getting seen. Will voters -- who've jobs, holidays, families along with a huge stack of screeners -- find time for you to watch "Rampart" (particularly Woodsy Harrelson), "Mess Tailor," "The Very First Grader," "A Much Better Existence," "Albert Nobbs," "We have to Discuss Kevin" yet others? They ought to, to appear past the apparent and appreciate the potential risks being taken. As 2011 involves a detailed, happy holidays and let us hope 2012 is much better for people which everybody is constantly on the break limitations. Michael Fassbender Bares All in Movies That Take a Frank Look at Sex

Michael Fassbender Bares All in Movies That Take a Frank Look at Sex By Jenelle Riley December 8, 2011 Michael Fassbender in "Shame" Michael Fassbender insists on having a sense of humor about sex. The actor is currently delivering acclaimed performances in two films in which coitus is a central topic. In "A Dangerous Method," he plays Carl Jung, whose study of sexuality leads to a torrid affair with a patient played by Keira Knightley. In the NC-17-rated "Shame," which re-teams him with "Hunger" director Steve McQueen, Fassbender delivers a startling naked performance, literally and figuratively, as a sex addict. At a press conference for "Shame," Fassbender and McQueen are like naughty boys misbehaving; Fassbender jokes that he used "fluffers" on set, and McQueen says his main motivation in making the film was "wanting to see Michael naked." When complimented on his lighthearted attitude in the face of such serious subject matter, Fassbender replies, "You have to laugh. In life in general, it's either laugh or cry, and it's always better to laugh." Here are five things to know about Fassbender:1. McQueen and Tarantino changed his career. Fassbender says he was a struggling actor for many years, with "friends who let me sleep on couches," before he landed work in such projects as "Band of Brothers" and "300." "Hunger," in which he lost more than 30 pounds to play real-life IRA prisoner Bobby Sands, changed his life. "Filmmakers saw it, and it got me in the room with them," Fassbender notes. One such filmmaker was Quentin Tarantino, who cast Fassbender as British officer Archie Hicox in "Inglourious Basterds." Fassbender had only one scene, but it was a great one; the way his character holds up three fingers gives away that he isn't German, and a bloody shootout ensues. After the film came out, Fassbender would pass people on the street who were holding up three fingers. "I was confused at first; then I laughed," he recalls. "Quentin puts you in iconic scenes with these little symbols people remember. And that's sort of the dream."2. He's not surprised by all the sex talk around "Shame." Fassbender says he knew going into the movie that much discussion would focus on his full-frontal nudity and the graphic depictions of sexual relations. In fact, he sees it as a positive. "Most audiences are intelligent, and they don't mind exploring these questions," he reasons. "But I also think, when it comes to press, it's just the easiest question. Like with 'Hunger,' the thing people focused in on was 'Wow, he lost all that weighthe must be a good actor!' " He says he wasn't unnerved by the content. "It's like, yeah, you know, I have a penis, and so do half the people out there. And a lot of the other half have seen them. It's not that unusual."3. He considers "Shame" his hardest role to date. Fassbender says his role in "Shame" was difficult, but not for the reasons one might think. "It wasn't about the nakedness; it was the places I was going to," he says. His toughest day involved shooting a tragic scene involving his sister, played by Carey Mulligan. "I remember feeling crazy when that was done, and they were like, 'Okay, change your clothes; we're heading to the gay club!' There was no rest. We shot it in five weeks, and it was an intense energy and focus. It was very draining: This guy is not somebody who likes himself very much, so he's abusing himself quite a bit."4. He treats all his roles with equal respect. It's been a banner year for Fassbender, whose other 2011 films include "Jane Eyre" and "X-Men: First Class." Asked if he takes playing Edward Fairfax Rochester as seriously as he does head mutant Magneto, Fassbender doesn't hesitate. "Absolutely, because my face is up there and I'm attached to it, and I don't want to do bad work," he notes. "I have a responsibility to the story, there's a lot of money and time and energy being put into it, and I have a responsibility to the audience and the fan base. I always try to believe in the characters, even if they're fantastical. I need them to be believable so you can go on the journey with them." He prepares the same for all projects. "I just sit with the script," he says. "I spend an awful lot of time with it, re-reading it like 300 times. Then I live and breathe with the characters; I spend a lot of time with them per day. And I like to have the whole script learned by the first day of shoot." He adds that he spends a lot of time trying out ideas and how a character would behave in different scenarios. "I have a very logical technique in place from the schools I went to; it's all about personality types and movement and space. How someone homophobic works with their hands. How a politician controls the area around them. How a dreamer is more self-indulgent and moves with a dreamlike quality." Asked if this has ever led him to become proprietary about characters and argue that, say, Magneto would never say such a line, Fassbender laughs. "Yeah, probably," he says. "I can see myself having a sort of hissy fit in my helmet. I used to be more like that. Now I'm a lot more open; why not try it out? In 'Shame,' there was a moment where we're sitting on the couch and I don't want to put my arm around my sister when she hugs him. He wants to wriggle free. I remember thinking: Well, just keep it there. Try it this way. Why are you making these rules? It's only closing doors. I can try it and if it doesn't work, scrap it. So I'm not as precious as I was before."5. The first time he saw "Shame" was with his father. "I told my parents while I was making it, 'Look, this isn't one we're going to see together,' " Fassbender recalls. "I warned my father, 'There's some stuff here that's pretty close to the bone.' And he said, 'Look, you're an artist; you've got to do your thing. That's your job.' " When his parents were with him in Italy when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, he reconsidered and invited them. His mother ended up not going, but his father attended. "During the film, I kept thinking, 'Thank God Mom's not here!' " he notes. "And my dad was sitting behind me going, 'Thank God Adele's not here!' But she'll see it, just not in the same room as me." After the film, Fassbender says his father approached McQueen and said, "You did it again." And what did he say to Fassbender? "Just one word. 'Amazing.' 'The Iron Lady' Trailer: Meryl Streep Has the Courage for This Fight

.post-content img {display:none;} While the UK trailer for 'The Iron Lady' relied on some pop-culture staples (Madness's 'Our House' as a music cue, for instance), this brand-new trailer keeps things taut and serious while focusing on the film's star attraction: Meryl Streep. La Streep hasn't won an Academy Award since the 1984 ceremonies (for her role in 'Sophie's Choice'), but based on the early buzz and this new clip, the Best Actress trophy could be hers to lose on Oscar night. Streep stars as Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady,' and not only mimics the former British prime minister with seeming expertise, but also infuses the steely world leader with a bit of wounded humanity. The results speak for themselves -- at least in trailer-form; Viola Davis and Michelle Williams better hope Streep twists an ankle on the way to the Kodak Theater stage on Feb. 26. 'The Iron Lady' opens in limited release on Dec. 30. Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook
