Dominic Cooper Heading To Motor City?

In talks for Albert Hughes' thrillerLast we heard, Chris Evans was in the frame, but now Variety are reporting that friend of Empire and Pint of Milk expert Dominic Cooper is in talks to join Albert Hughes' action thriller Motor City.Clearly turning heads in Hollywood this year with Captain America and his acclaimed and impressive dual-role in The Devil's Double, the dapper Cooper would need to dress down for a movie that would cast him as a recently-released convict on a mission for revenge on the bastard that framed him. And if that sounds formulaic, the twist is that, at this stage, Chad St John's hot Black List screenplay is entirely free of dialogue...Hughes' last film was the biblically ass-kicking Book of Eli, and Motor City is where he's ended up following the Akira debacle. Warners are apparently keen to get it moving quickly, with action veteran Joel Silver producing through his Silver Pictures banner.

Hammond: When The Academy Give Agents Full Voting Rights For Oscars?

You can depend onto it. It seems almost always there is sometalent agency honchoout there who reboots the decades-old pursuit to achieve Oscar voting rights for agents. The subject always appears, nevertheless the answer, no matter the merits in the idea, is going to be the identical. It'll NEVER happen. I’ve heard your time and energy is gearing uponce moreand agencymovers and shakers inside the movement for equal Academy voting rights are trying to find encouraging ears on television to assist the main reason making some noise again. Clearly, the Academy hastraditionally helda different opinion. Agents are allowed in only as connect people. The quantity of agents with this particular status inside the Academy is wellunder 100 and hasincluded majornames like Rob Berg,Kevin Huvane, Patrick Whiteselland many otherslike WME’sBrian Swardstrom, nobody has their very own Oscar while not a election(keep reading through through for further on that).Just as one connect means they get invites to visit Academy occasions and maybeaccess tofreebie moviesat local movie theaters throughout Oscar time, but theydon’t obtain own branch or anyreps round the Board of Governorsand no voting rights whatsoever, kind of like illegal aliens. Certainly they’ve never even become close to people rights even when worrying that PR people have their unique branch and acquire to election. Lately, the Academy has stiffened needs for every branch, including Pr, now insist there's a rigid format for admission. Basically, no personal publicists as well as the most partjust people who've proven a normal leadership role at art galleries and distribution companies or unit publicists, who focus on movie sets. As well as the Academy now only accepts new people once each year. For 2011 it recently welcomed 178 new voting people across all branches considered area of the “arts and sciences” of movies so plainly featured inside the organization’s title. The definitionapparentlydoesn’t apply totalent agents, whom the Acad has typically examined asenablers rather a fundamental piece of the filmmaking process.Whichever decade in the Acad’s 83-year history this issue remains broached, you will also have government bodies particularlyworriedabout the chance conflict of interests in improving the status of agents. But one or more vocal agent and fasten Academy member gripes to Deadline that the time has come for change. “It’s an anachronism. Everyone features a conflict of curiosity, not just agents,” they are saying. Certainly anybody who knows the means by which many voters individually cast their ballots can verify that, but who mentioned existence is fair? Throughout history winningvoting rights for a number of groups has already established enormous personal toll, sweat and protests to create the privilege. Missing taking for the streets of Beverly Slopes and demanding their “rights”, it’s difficult to imagine what agents is capable of doing to exhibit this around, and not many on the market seem to possess much sympathy for cause.According to launched reviews, former Leader in the Academy Gregory Peckonce mentioned agents would have the election “over my dead body”. I guess some would rather Not an connect of the club as the one that made the deals that aided ask them to there. But hasn’t the perception from the products agents caused by get films made changed like other things in this business? Aren’t the occasions of searching their way as merely a deal maker over? Using the “packaging” and putting intricate movies together, agents, no less than the most effective ones, do participate more inside the science and art of filmmaking, and therefore without their dogged persistence there might be no film to start with. Particularly to get lots of indie movies made nowadays, like Best Picture individuals who win The Hurt Locker as well as the King’s Speech. Agentingmay function as misunderstood science and art of movies. Proof of that was never made more public than when actress Tilda Swinton recognized her Best Supporting Actress award in 2007 for Michael Clayton. In their speech she thanked director Tony Gilroy, co-star George Clooney, but many importantly her American agent John Swardstrom, who convinced her to use inside the U.S. “I’m giving this for you personally,” she mentioned, after which referred to to media that “I’m passing onto John. He warrants it. I wouldn’t be around whether or not this weren’t for him. … It might (calm hiim lower) once i’m round the speakerphone telling him I’m prone to do another art film in Europe.” And he or she meant it.He retains it. Once I saw her in Telluride captured and asked for where her Oscar is becoming, she looked quizzically at me and mentioned, “It’s his”. With an actor to supply their Oscar on their representative is the kind of testimony that might be proficient at changing awareness within the Academy hierarchy relating to this problem. Or else. Final point here's many people in the Academy either have or have observed a realtor, so when they don’t desire to take part in exactly the same sandbox together there’s hardly any that can be done. Some in energy positions still have a look their way as obstructionists or roadblocks in the ability of making movies, and to date as full membership inthe clubby Academy is anxious they are still searching inside the window within the outdoors whilst you will discover voting individuals who haven’t labored positively available foryears. Basically, it’s difficult to turn thistrain around. It’s not unequalled, though. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences doesn’t have the symptoms of challenge with agents in addition to has two spots around the Board of Governors restricted to “Professional Reps”. But my suggestion for agents who reallyhave their heart set oncasting a ballotforthe harder-to-crack Oscars and not Emmysis to accomplish like plenty of your former co-employees did formerly. Stop just as one agent and become a producer, as well as a studio mind. Just request Academy voting member Ron Meyer.

NBC"Big Designers" A federal judge in Missouri has declined an electronic digital photographer's request an injunction in the suit regarding the Bravo reality series Big Designers. Within This summer time, Michael Eastman punished Warner Bros., Bravo owner NBC Universal, and decorator Martyn Lawrence Bullard for allegedly taking among his famous photographs and growing how big it being the "pièce p résistance" in episode 5 in the series. Bravo'sMillion Dollar Decoratorsoffers a review of high-finish interior designers who brighten within the houses of stars. Inside the episode in mind, among Eastman's photographs entitled"Isabella Two Chairs, 1999" increased being a product for your living room ofmodel/actressDaisy Fuentes. Eastman mentioned any time Bullard looked for permission to take advantage from the photo, he initially gave it as being a Clearance Agreement. Nevertheless the complaintant alleges the waiver did not cover the version in the photo that was then utilized on this program. In line with the digital digital photographer, Bullard found one photo web needed it to Warner Bros, where a "special image-enlargement machine" was utilized to create a15 foot tall and 8 foot wide reproduction. Examining the issue of whether Bravo should pull the episode in mind from distribution, US District Court Judge Henry Edward Autrey learned that Eastman hadn't offered sufficient evidence he'd succeed round the merits in the situation. "Typically, Litigants demonstrate that there can be a geniune problem in regards to the scope in the permission granted inside the Clearance Agreement," written the judge inside an opinion launched the other day. The judge also counted Eastman's non-appearance in the courtroom as evidence the series hadn't hurt the commercial price of his art. In line with the opinion, Eastman didn't appear within a hearing to argue the preliminary injunction because the photo in dispute was associated with a "major exhibition" within the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. "Thinking about this, it seems that the feel of The Task inside the Bravo series hardly crippled the control of his art and status," written the judge. Five Reasons To See 'Moneyball'

by Brian Phares and Josh Wigler "Moneyball," directed by Bennett Miller and starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, slides into theaters this weekend, telling the true story of the 2002 Oakland Athletics season. Pitt stars as Billy Beane, a former Major League Baseball player who now serves as general manager of the A's in a time of turmoil: the team has lost three of its star players, and lacks the proper funding to compete against the big boys back east. But where there's a will, there's a way, and with the help of newly appointed assistant general manager Peter Brand (played by Jonah Hill), Beane milks a bad situation for all it's worth and forms a competitive team out of virtually nothing. Though not quite a grand slam, "Moneyball" certainly wins the game with a must-see effort for any and all fans of the sports drama. Check out five reasons to see "Moneyball" past the jump. A Dynamic Duo I wouldnt have believed it either, but Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill make for an excellent team. Jonahs character, Peter Brand, is an unassuming genius of the game, while Brad Pitt plays the only man in the league who is crazy enough, and desperate enough, to believe Brands heretical theories on baseball. Its heartwarming to see the two develop a relationship in which they both rely on each other; Beane for Jonahs insight, and Brand for Pitts faith. -BP The Politics Of the Game One of the most fascinating aspects of the film is the glimpse it gives the viewer of just what goes on in the mind of a GM, and the team he has assembled around him to find the best players. One of my favorite scenes of the movie is a round table discussion in which Pitt has assembled his scouts to choose their picks for this seasons draft. The reasoning behind their choices is almost so ludicrous, that I imagine it has to be true. One of the scouts tells Beane not to choose a player because he has an ugly girlfriend, citing the facts, Ugly girlfriend means no confidence. Wise words my friend, wise words. -BP Kerris Dorsey This is a movie about baseball, yes, but it's also about Billy's desperate attempt to get through to the other side of a raw deal still intact. To that end, he's given support by his young daughter Casey, played by Kerris Dorsey, best known for her recurring role on "Brothers & Sisters." It's a small role in terms of screen time, but a big one in terms of heart, and Dorsey shows a lot of promise in her brief appearances in front of the camera. Plus, her character puts forth a soulful song that's still stuck in my head almost a full week after seeing the movie in a good way! -JW The Script Its hard to go wrong with a team like Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian, both Oscar winners who bring their A-game to this story about the Oakland As. There are countless one-liners that zip and zing their way throughout Moneyball, and a lot of the credit goes to the actors for their delivery of said dialogue, but it wouldnt exist without the rock solid script from Sorkin and Zaillian. My personal favorite, aside from the above-mentioned "ugly girlfriend" observation, is the metaphor, both in terms of what it represents for the film and life as a whole, and also in the way its delivered. No spoilers here; youll know what I mean once youve seen the flick. -JW The Streak Without a doubt the most thrilling sequence in Moneyball is the Oakland As historic win streak. After all of the doubts our characters face throughout the film, all of their questionable choices, it all seems to pay off in a big way during the climax of the film. If you are like me and had no idea that this streak even happened, or how it ended, then I wont spoil it for you. But I will say this: the climax of the film hits it out of the park, and really captures the spirit of the great baseball movies of yore. -BP Tell us what you think of "Moneyball" in the comments section and on Twitter!

Hollywood Docket: Did Netflix Register the Qwikster Trademark?

Jin Lee/Bloomberg/Getty Images Netflix has announced that it is splitting its DVD and streaming businesses into two separate entities. The company's traditional DVD-by-mail business will now be known as "Qwikster," but did it register a trademark on the name? The US Patent & Trademark office shows no records on the mark "Qwikster," but if the name was registered in the past few days, it's possible that the registration hasn't been uploaded into the database yet. STORY: Humbled Netflix Separates DVD and Streaming Businesses, Abandons Price Changes Then again, the company evidently failed to claim the Twitter handle @Qwikster, before changing its name. The account is controlled by a weed-smoking elmo. The USPTO shows nothing on "Qwikster," but there are hits on the similarly spelled "Quickster," first registered for telephone indexes by Bates Manufacturing Co. in 1981. Another company also got to "Quickster" last week, registering the mark forquick-assembly portable multi-sport practice nets. Reportedly, Netflix has been buying up domain names on Qwikster misspellings, so we'll see if there's any trademark issues in the midst. In other entertainment law news: The First Circuit Court of Appeals has rejected the opinion of a federal judge who slashed a $675,000 jury verdict against song pirate Joel Tenenbaum. In this long-running case, a judge reduced the penalty to $67,500 for sharing 30 songs because the original award was "unconstitutionally excessive," but now the appeals circuit has reinstated the original amount, finding that constitutional questions about the limits of statutory damages in copyright cases belong to Congress. Speaking of file-sharing, don't blame the girls. A new study finds that women are staying away from Pirate Bay and BitTorrent. There's no word on why The Vampire Diaries is a popular P2P item. Over in China, acclaimed director Zhang Yimou has been cleared of charges for infringing the copyright on the city of Anshun's opera for his 2005 film,Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles. The case was the first to be brought under the new Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Law, which sought to preserve Chinese national traditions through the conferment of certain intellectual property rights. Mickey Rooney was allegedly tricked into thinking he was on the verge of poverty and robbed of millions by his stepson and other family members, according to a lawsuit filed last week in LA Superior Court. Dolphin Tale

Warners Dolphin Tale is loosely based on Winter, the first dolphin to be fitted with a prosthetic tail.A Warner Bros. release of an Alcon Entertainment presentation. Produced by Andrew A. Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Richard Ingber. Executive producers, Robert Engelman, Steven P. Wegner. Associate producers, Brad Arensman, Carl Rogers. Co-producers, Yolanda T. Cochran, David Yates. Directed by Charles Martin Smith. Screenplay, Karen Janszen, Noam Dromi.Dr. Clay Haskett - Harry Connick, Jr. Lorraine Nelson - Ashley Judd Sawyer Nelson - Nathan Gamble Reed Haskett - Kris Kristofferson Hazel Haskett - Cozi Zuehlsdorff Dr. Cameron McCarthy - Morgan Freeman Kyle Connellian - Austin StowellThough garnished with some heavy dollops of cheese, "Dolphin Tale" is a surprisingly solid, earnest family pic, based very loosely on the story of Winter, the first dolphin to be successfully fitted with a prosthetic tail. While the film piles on various backstories and morals a bit haphazardly, parents will surely applaud its underlying message of adolescent empowerment, and the far better than average cast gives this one a strong emotional undercurrent. Pic should perform well at the B.O., with even better returns on homevid. As protagonist Sawyer, a fictional, fatherless 11-year-old, young thesp Nathan Gamble ("Babel," "The Dark Knight") ably carries the Florida-set film. A mechanical whiz kid, Sawyer nonetheless struggles through a remedial summer school class, has no friends and is so unsociable he can hardly bother to look up from his Nintendo DS at a going-away party for his soldier cousin (Austin Stowell), headed off to serve in Afghanistan. His zombie-like trudge to school the next day is interrupted by an encounter with a beached dolphin tangled in a crab trap. Fascinated by the crack task force of marine biologists who show up to rescue her, Sawyer skips school to sneak out to the nearby marine hospital, where the aquarium's home-schooled young gopher Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) takes an immediate liking to him. The creaky-yet-homey aquarium is run by Hazel's father Clay (Harry Connick Jr.), who lives on a nearby houseboat with his own father, Reed (Kris Kristofferson). All three generations of this family serve as inexhaustible fonts of some rather hackneyed homespun wisdom, but with actors as appealing as these (young debutante Zuehlsdorff holds her own with the elder two nicely), it all goes down rather easy. The injuries to the dolphin (now dubbed Winter) necessitate amputation of her tail, which in the wild would mean almost certain death. With Sawyer gradually dropping out of summer school and hanging around the aquarium full time, Winter eventually develops an odd new swimming technique, swinging her tail-stub from side to side. This creates problems of its own, however, and Sawyer recruits a prosthetics expert from a VA hospital (Morgan Freeman) to construct a synthetic tail, all while the marine hospital faces closure. The central notion here is one parents will appreciate, as Sawyer comes to learn the importance of education and engagement with the world in his own way. The film limns this lesson with subtlety, and Gamble's strong performance helps give the film a genuine character arc where there otherwise could have simply been a heavy-handed moral. (Other strands -- especially one involving Sawyer's cousin -- come off a bit more forced, though the filmmakers are still to be commended for tackling such topics as disability and debt with unusual frankness.) Aside from two gimmicky CGI sequences clearly intended for 3D (and rather cartoonish-looking without it), the pic is smartly constructed and trusts its young audience to pay attention through long spells without any superfluous slapstick or one-liners (a sadly rare quality in contemporary family pics). Animal wranglers put in terrific work with the central creature (portrayed by the actual dolphin the pic is based upon), and location scouting in Clearwater, Fla., provides for some believable scenery.Camera (color), Karl Walter Lindenlaub; editor, Harvey Rosenstock; music, Mark Isham; music supervisor, Deva Anderson; production designer, Michael Corenblith; costume designer, Hope Hanafin; art director, Richard Fojo; sound (Dolby Digital/Datasat/SDDS), Scott Clements; supervising sound editor, Kelly Cabral; re-recording mixers, Timothy O.
